Faculty Mentoring and Student Research Showcased at Music Theory Midwest 2020

August 9, 2020 - Nick Schumacher

Alumni of the MSU Music Theory area were well represented at the 2020 Music Theory Midwest virtual conference. Alexandrea Jonker (’18) presented a paper titled “‘Dissonation’ of Tonal Materials in Vivian Fine’s Ultra-Modernist Compositions.” Neal Endicott, who graduated from MSU this spring, presented a paper titled “Mamlok on Day One: Strategies for Incorporating Recent Music Throughout the Undergraduate Music Theory Curriculum.”

In addition to alumni presenting work of their own, James Schippers, a dual-major student in both music theory and piano, teamed up with faculty member James Sullivan to present a co-authored paper at the conference. A recording of their presentation, titled “Metric Manipulations in 19th-Century Piano Music and Lieder,” can be found here.

Congratulations to all involved!
